Food, Lodging and Camping Options

Food, Lodging, and Camping

Food Package:
Since the venue is not very close to restaurants or stores, we’ve simplified things for you and are offering a food package. The Mountain Institute’s staff will cook up breakfast and dinner while you are racing with us.

A post-race dinner is included with your entry fee and you'll be riding your bike all morning and afternoon, so we'll have food at the aid stations on race-day.

The Food Package includes 3 meals, (Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, and Sunday breakfast), and costs $40. You can also purchase a la carte meals at $15 each. More detailed menu information to come. If non-racing companions will be with you, please be sure to register for additional food packages, or send us an e-mail, so we know how much food to have.) We even have a race-day lunch option for your non-racing companions if needed. Feel free to bring your own food with you as well, but ensure you bring your own camp stove cooking gear.

Camping:
Rustic tent camping is available at the venue for a $15.00 per person fee. This is a flat per person rate and covers one or both nights. You'll have access to the rest of the facilities for showers and bathrooms.
Lodging Package:
We had dormitory packages for $25 per person, per night. Check out what the facilities look like here.  The dorms may fill up quickly, so reserve early.

The dormitories were built in the 1990s. These buildings were constructed using two distinct styles of architecture. One dormitory is a standard wood-framed structure, but the other is constructed of rammed-earth bricks made using local soil. Each dormitory provides bunkhouse-style accommodations with four separate rooms, each room sleeping five to six people.

The shower house is a short distance from the dormitories. Visitors may follow a path, lighted at night, to modern amenities such as flush toilets and private showers. Alternatively, guests may visit one of our composting toilets, which function without water.

A few important notes about the venue:
  • The Spruce Knob Mountain Center is in a remote location.
  • The nearest gas station is 12 miles away. The nearest grocery store is an hour away.
  • If you are bringing your own food, please come prepared with a fully stocked supply.
  • Pets are not allowed at the venue.  Thanks for understanding.

Other lodging and camping options:
If camping or dorms aren't your style there are plenty of options in the area as long as you don't mind a bit of a drive before and after the race.
The closest cities with a selection of hotels are Harrisonburg, VA, Elkins, WV, and Canaan Valley, WV. There are also some smaller hotels in Franklin, WV, Petersburg, WV, and Seneca Rocks, WV.  There are also numerous cabin rentals in the area. All except Seneca Rocks are at least an hour drive to the venue, so keep that in mind when reserving your lodging.

There are other camping and lodging options in the area, including miles of forest service roads that offer free camping if you can find an open spot in summer.
